Jim was born in Chicago, raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL and spent most of his adult life in Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC so he considers himself northern by birth but southern by the grace of God.
He graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School, home of the Flying L's and received a degree in Business Administration from Berry College and a Juris Doctorate from Woodrow Wilson School of Law. He is a life long learner and continued his formal studies by taking post baccalaureate and graduate courses in Accounting, Quantitative Math and Education.
Jim began his career in public accounting in Fort Lauderdale before moving to Atlanta were he passed the Georgia Certified Public Accountant, Georgia Bar and the Certified Internal Auditor exams. For many years he was also very active in the local chapters of those three organizations. In addition to many years in the Financial Services industry he has held positions in Accounting, Internal Auditing, Criminal, Civil and Corporate Law as well as being an Adjunct Professor of Accounting, Auditing and Business Law at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
During his career in Financial Services he was a Financial Advisor, Supervisory Principal and Compliance Officer for such major firms as Waddell & Reed, A.G. Edwards & Co., Banc of America Securites and Well Fargo Advisors (formerly Wachovia Securities). He held NASD Series 7, 24 and 9/10 registrations as well as insurance licenses in both Georgia and North Carolina..
He bought his first mutual fund over 40 years ago and has continued to improve his knowledge and experience by studying and investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds as well as Closed End and Exchange Traded Funds. Jim is now a full time investor and a financial advisor to Marketocracy Capital Management, LLC where his recommendations are used to manage mutual funds and separately managed accounts managed by that firm.
Jim won the Strategy Lab Open, a model stock portfolio competition sponsored by Marketocracy. MSN Money Central and Investor Place Media. He now writes on investing and portfolio management on Barchart Portfolio Blogs and is a frequent contributor to Seeking Alpha, MSN Top Stocks, Motley Fool as well as Marketocracy Forums.
